wasn't math rock a genre invented to make music nazi's feel alright about liking the emo-inclined bands of america?
true dat. they put some confusing rules with it aswell like "thou must only use odd time meters in ones music sounds" and that kind of crap. A friend spent about half an hour explaining the difference between post-hardcore/emo and "math rock" once... but to be honest it's a load of balonie.
For a really confused rant about emo, see owen's post on nu-emo (what a gay)
CORRECTION- see owen's really interesting and amazingly hip post about nu-emo, no joke of a lie.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxetc
bloody hell, i just looked up some reviews of apparant "math-rock" bands, the obvious ones- q and not u and slint (to be honest they're the only ones i can think of). Apparantly The dillinger escape plan is part of the math-core genre aswell along with the number 12 looks good on you (or is it "looks like you"...) and converge,
i think basically putting a "post-" prefix on a genre means that its the reverse of the original, and "math-" means that its the same but all off-kilter and weird.
slint are pretty much the original post-rock band i think, and math-core is just math-rock but with screaming.
jesus, and i meant POST ROCK. not prog rock.
i think they are okay, in the same way that explosions in the sky/mogwai/sigur ros are okay. actually, i quite like those 3 bands, they are quite good for backgound music/music to think to. i think its the lyrics that make minus the bear a bit crap. they don't seem to be able to work out what they want to be either, musically. it all seems a bit confused.
i wikipedia'd math-rock, and apparantly slint/etc are because they don't use 2:2 timings or something and it's really off-beat in an "interesting" kind of way instead of a gross kind of way (apparently). Plus math-rock bands by nature have really shite lyrics because it's all about the music maaan.
but i agree, all a bit confused. And i did like them a little bit, i suppose.

those bands are not prog-rock? they're not post-rock either if you meant that? they're also pretty different sounding bands, especially the dismemberment plan who are (were?) nothing like the others and really much better. What's with the need to classify and group everything anyway? It only confuses me.
Yes, well.. apparently i can post things on here without actually signing up, how exciting.
it's Becky by the way, obv.
yah, yah, see three comments up... i corrected myself. i think i got a bit overexcited. the dimemberment plan- they are post-rock, eh? i don't really remember what i was comparing it to, i have no idea why i'm awake. it is half past eight in the morning and i would like to die a little bit.

heh, uhm.. no they're kinda not, just general indie-rock i think. more like built to spill and pavement and stuff.
i didn't get paid enough money and also want to die a bit :'(

ps. please send me those photos of you to cheer me up
hah. i just looked at them again and they are so awful, it's great. make a myspace and i'll put them on that ;)(y)=me. *enter your scorned face*
OKAY, i'm actually awake now. Cursive/ minus the bear/ and death cab are really similar sounding to me...? god, i didn't really mean post/prog rock at all i don't think. I'm not really sure what i was talking about, i'm sure i had a point to what i was saying...
